If you search the archives you will see there are several approaches to this problem. Some people have had bad luck with fineline tape lifting paint off, so they use the 3M blue painter's tape and make sure it seals firmly (Steve, I think, uses one of those little wallpaper rollers). Whatever tape you use, make sure the paint is well-cured and do not leave the tape on for very long (some advocate taking it off with each coat of varnish) and try to avoid exposing the tape to lots of direct sunlight. I used the blue painter's tape myself with good results, but my paint/varnish transition is under the rubstrips so it is not as critical as your case. Good luck!
