Taping fresh paint;..

I pulled that expensive green tape off today, leaving lovely clean lines between the 1" overlap on the deck and the soon to be varnished decking. So the next step is to reverse the process and tape the paint so I can varnish the deck. Should I do that, or put vasoline or something like that on the paint to protect it from the varnish, or just go ahead and varnish over the decking part of the pain? How long till I can apply tape without worrying that it will pull of the pretty paint job?
