Michael, I'll leave the varnish question to the experts. In fact, I'd probably ask the varnish manufacturer hisself for the lowdown... who knows? He might send you some new stuff.

But I can tackle the seat thing with some confidence borne of experience: after trying several different schemes, I am now of the opinion that carved minicell is where it's at, period. And I'm talking all-day comfort. Nothing less for me, any more.
