Bob,
As you apply the epoxy to the cloth, each layer will follow the contour of the glass. i.e. it will stand on the weave and sink in the voids. If you want a really smooth finish, you're going to have to sand between epoxy coats. Then apply a final coat with a squeegee (sp) or a plastic bodywork spatula. This should level out the coat and make it glass smooth. Be careful sanding and don't get into the glass any more than you can help.
