the previous thread about a cracked deck was before the present overbuilt hatch hole reinforcements and deck glass. The skeg box isn't located where the old decks were vulnerable, which was at the forward edge of the hatch to the coaming. Skegs are useful for making maneuverable hulls track straighter or compensate for weathercocking. The Chesapeaks track very well, they weathercock a slight amount that a skeg can be useful to correct for as the lean-to-turn characteristics are marginal past a certain point of lean. You'll find less of a need for a skeg in a well loaded LT Chesapeake than a lightly loaded standard because of less windage.
