Mill Creek Hatches

Posted by Kurt Maurer on Jul 1, 2004

Joe, on my Mill Creeks I installed the simplest hatches known to mankind. No rims, no underdeck reinforcement, no gaskets -- nothing but lids over holes and a means to hold 'em down. And those MC13s have been all over the USA, and in waters *never meant* for the design. Never a problem, either; the MCs are so dry as to render the trouble of gasketing superfluous. Even car-topping them in heavy rains is barely an inconvenience. I recommend you turn your attention to all the other pressing matters at hand...

Now on the Cormorants, the story changes dramatically! When your boat is going to be spending time upside-down, it's a whole 'nuther ball game! Looking back, I don't think that "practicing" on the MC's hatches would have done much good, since there would be no real results to prove or disprove any method chosen.

Thus I revert back to the first adage ever muttered in my boat building life: work with what you have.

Cheers, Kurt
