The strip of FG between the strut and the hatch perhaps serves an additional purpose; it would seem, given the nature of that joint, and the clamping pressure necessary to force the hatch to the radius curve of that strut, the joint would have a tendency to be epoxy-starved. Having an epoxy saturated strip of FG sandwiched in between would seemingly overcome that little problem, and result in a much stronger bond.
