Re: Bizarro Hatch Laminat

Didn't someone post an explanation about the hatch covers and the changes to them? LeeG maybe?

As a senile 35 year old, I'll try to recount the explanation in the hopes that it will trigger someone elses memory.

In the original kits, without the tape sandwich, hatches started to delaminate over time. Especially in safety maneuvers.

The instructions are to have the fiberglass tape run the width of the hatch cover, not just the width of the support.

This gives added strength on the edges of the hatch, where the glass sits on the hatch ring. This of course is where all/any weight will be applying a force to the hatch.

I don't completely get the engineering principles that lazlo described, but it seems that glass is only needed on one side in this case, because the force is always going to come from the same direction.

I hope I didn't misrepresent the facts.
