Removing Water Stains

This is not actually a kayak question, but I am sure that a lot of you have experience with this anyways.

I am refinishing the mahogany interior on my old boston whaler. There are a couple of areas where the varnish had really broken down and the wood now has dark stains from moisture. What is the best way to remove these stains from the wood?

I am eager to get this project out of the way so that I can get back to the two almost complete chesapeakes that are getting lonely in the garage.
