I almost always used bow and stern lines except for one time while crossing the Mobile Delta on I10 where my Thule Rack started coming off the car (a rack design defect). Luckily I caught it before it became a catastrophe.

You should not only attach the bow line but also a stern line. If the rear of the rack became detached the rack could move and possibly loosen the bow line. So really, to "tie the rack" to the car you need both bow AND stern lines!!!
