The deck beam and the carlins form a frame around the cockpit hole. The reason for this structure is that the cockpit hole causes a weakness much like drilling a hole in a piece of tubing. When a lot of stress is applied the place that's going to bend and possibly break is right where the hole is. When my deck pulled away from the deck beams I epoxied some thick wooden shims in the gaps. Didn't add much weight and kept the deck nice and stiff. Charlie
