practically speaking it doesn't if you seal the hole well with epoxy and use adhesive/sealant. But the method does have an "add-on" appearance to it. On a couple kayaks I routed the cables through the mahogany rudder block which requires a 12" drill to do well and helps to put the wires inboard. The rudder block makes for a SOLID routing and eliminates the messy glop of silicone adhesive that ends up pulling away from the plastic wire housing.
