enough,,,and the paddler is limber. Using the paddle as as outrigger is ok if you are aware it's NOT meant to bear much weight. Otherwise get a heavy glass shaft paddle like Lightning expedition glass shaft paddle. You're right about making the transition quickly and smoothly. The problem with the but first method for the average 31" interior dimension coaming is that the back band shoudn't be sitting right against the back of the coaming,,,if it's set foreward as it should be then the clearance for shins is iffy and it requires significant flexibility to do the butt first entry for long legged folks.
