Stick to the 3M pads. Its hard to find bronze wool in fine enough grades even here in Portland, OR where all else boaty is available. I like the pads since they can be shop vac'd out during use and then washed out for use again later. They are great for getting the gloss off varnish and removing the dust bunnies between coats but I still wet sand (400) every 2nd or 3rd coat. The pads conform to every thing so are not as good for smoothing. For example a small run in your varnish will not be removed by a pad. I will wet sand also just before my last coat - or what I hope will be my last coat.
