This is all good advice, thanks! I taped to the edge, but now I know why, so that part is good. From your responses, my problem is in two parts:

1. I am impatient with epoxy -- I'll read the bottles again. 2. The end-grain of the stiffeners soaked up a lot of my thickened epoxy.

I'll try to pry it up a little more and then do my best to soak the end grain and fill with thickened epoxy before clamping for a much longer period of time.
