Not a plane- a spoke

shave- it's a two handled small tool normally used in a pulling fashion. Very handy for inside curves. Several tool catalogs will show them. I use my flat sole one much much more often but the curved one is just irreplaceable for what it does.
A wooden plane will work wonderfully, BUT you really should get some practice before you try using one. Different beast.
Personally, I really don't see how people can build wooden boats without at least a block plane, a spoke shave :) and a couple of chisels. If for no other reason than the absolute joy of using them.
