We use these nearly every day in our shop, which is to say, the various boatbuilders are often fighting over them. See, wood screws like the ones included in all of our kits taper to a point, and need to be countersunk. The traditional approach to get the most strength and avoid splitting is to use several drill bits: one for the shaft of the screw, and at least one more to countersink below the surface of the wood. That means two drills, and a third to actually drive the screw. But get this: there are beautiful tapered drills that do it all in one shot. The drill bit is tapered, not straight, so screws get the perfect bite. Attached to the bit is a countersinking cutter, so you catch that in the same pass.
Our kit includes five bits: #6, #8, #10, #12, and #14. The set comes in a handsome wooden case and includes plug cutters, so that you can make up your own wood plugs to cover the screw holes. An indispensable addition to any woodworker's tool kit.
