Question on lug rig for a Passagemaker

I'm building a Passagemaker from plans. I've built the boom from a 1 1/2'' square length of douglas fir, tapered the last 20" on either end. I've already drilled the holes for lacing the sail to the boom.

I'm going to drill another hole to attach the main sheet to the boom. How far from the after end of the boom should I attach the sheet?

Also, will I be able to hold the mainsheet in my hand, as I can on my Eastport Pram, or will I have to run it through a pulley attached to a line slung between the stern handles (or perhaps a loop of line coming from the center seat, as with the Skerry?

Thanks!
