Deck glassing

Does the decks of the Oxford Shell need to have glass cloth or can they just be epoxied and varnished??

Thanks,

RE: Deck glassing

I wouild glass the deck for added structual stenght of the surface and more importantly to create a better attachment of the deck to the hull since the deck's glass will overlap onto the sides and then filled in with epoxy.

The glass also give some reinforcement  if the epoxy should crack. If you are worried about weight use a lighter weight glass cloth.

I didn't glass the coamings on several of the first kayaks that I build. After a few seasons, they were beat up pretty good. So, when it was time for new varnish, the coamings got sanded all the way to the epoxy and glassed. For the deck, the glass adds alot of strength, and doubles the glass at the top of the sides where the boat gets rubbed the most.

I would glass it. Lots of stress on the boat from those sculls and kicking.
