Anyone has some plans/ideas for wooden adjustable footpeg/footbraces for a wooden kayak?

What we use for our racing boats here are two pieces of lets say 2ft long by 3in wide, with holes as close as can be without touching along the length. Each one is glued to one side and in the middle there are 2 aluminum tubes one inside the other fixed with a spring (think of the plastic toilet paper tube but made out of metal) going for one side to the other. This method is tried and true but I was wondering does any one know other easy to do adjustable footbraces, preferably wooden or some easy to work material.
