Offering Boat Building Class in a Middle School?

Last year I had the wonderful opportunity to build my own CLC Shearwater Sport.  I'm a public school teacher and was able to complete it during my summer break!

This school year I have a free class period that I am brainstorming on what to suggest that I teach.  I have thought offering a boat building class to a small group of 8th graders.  Does anyone know of any boat building courses that are offered to middle schoolers?

I would like to be able to present a functional program in a similar school and a curriculum to our school administration.  Also need to know what kind of budget I should be looking at requesting?  I would like to build 2 boats at the same time if possible so that the students have a more hands on experience.  Unfortuantly there are no tools at the school to use, our shop class was dismantled about 10 years ago and the equipment was removed from the building...

Thanks for you input!

keep the project really simple, but also something that looks and acts like a real boat. check out the peace canoe from Wooden Boat Mag.

Maybe John designed it? I forget. you could easily biuld two and some paddles.

Consider the Bevin's Skiff (http://alexandriaseaport.org/at-the-boat-shops/bevin-skiff/).  If you build it with kids, then the plans are available for free (http://woodenboat.com/build-boat).  If I remember correctly, there may even be a CLC kit version on this site.

"Mr. Terrell" .................are you about 100 years old? My eigth grade shop teacher, Mr. Terrell,  would be about that age by now. It was ages ago in Indianapolis.

Whatever you build select a type of boat that is popular in your area.  If SUPS are popular go there.  If river kyaks are popular go that direction.  Keep it as simple as possible.  Great idea.  So sad that the shops have been removed from schools.  Fortunately, you do not need many tools to build CLC  type boats.

Try calling and talking to CKC. They have done building classes with these.
