Scarf using a hand plane

Hi,

I am trying to make a scarf in a 10mm Okoume plywood and have the following issue:

When I plane, I am able to make the bevel smooth with the layers parallel. However, the bottom most layer and therefore the edge is not smooth.

The top and bottom layer have grain parallel to the long edge of the sheet. Perhaps I need to somehow adjust my technique on the bottom-most layer.

Please help.

Thanks

Matej

RE: Scarf using a hand plane

Is the plane blade cutting the full thidkness of the bottom plywood layer?

You may need to elevate the stack of plywood sheets being scarfed.

RE: Scarf using a hand plane

First, use a very sharp low-angle block plane. Second, skew the plane so the blade is facing downhill, especially as you cut the bottom veneer. For your final cuts, back the depth way off and skew the plane something past 60 degrees, while still pushing it across the length of the scarf. This will only cut a small ribbon of the scarf's surface, so these deeply skewed cuts need to be blended into the rest of the scarf surface. Use your eyes, and only cut where the veneers tell you that material must be removed.

lastly, thickening your epoxy with wood flour will make 90% of the jagged edge visually disappear.
