Alternate Types of Fiber Cloth

Has anyone used carbon fiber and/or kevlar cloth instead of the recommended fiberglass cloth?  Is it any different to install?

RE: Alternate Types of Fiber Cloth

Nick Schade has some good information about this on his website with a great video, as well:

RE: Alternate Types of Fiber Cloth

beyond the different physical characteristics of the finished composite, most differences relate to tools required to cut, impact on sandability and visual impact/management.

- getting a clean cut of kevlar for example, requires shears that are designed for kevlar.  also not a great option of any piece that you expect to need to sand/shape.  so works nice for tape seams on the inside for hull and deck (not expected to get sanded) vs outside seam which gets sanded/faired into the hull).

- for carbon fibre to look nice, you need to pay attention to layout pattern.  also not a great material visually if you end up sanding into it except if you a creating a clean edge (e.g., sanding the edge of coaming to bring it into final shape)

fwiw...i found if you are looking for some visual effects without the cost and hassle....you can do some tricks such as black behren stain on the wood on the inside of a boat than normal epoxy/glass but without fill coats creates a very good simulation of a carbon fibre interior.
