Getting cured epoxy of bolt threads

I got sloppy with the bolts that mate the akas of the sailrig to the amas during some rework. Now all the threads are gunked up. What do u guys recommend to clear the threads of the copious epoxy?

thanks in advance.

Thanks.

RE: Getting cured epoxy of bolt threads

you can break it off with a pliers.

epoxy wont usually bond well to a bolt unless it was prepared to be bonded. just be careful not to strip the threads.

put a little wd40 on the nut after you are done and screw it onto the bolt.  that should remove any remaining particles.

i have used this technique to clear c-clamps that i spilled epoxy on.

works pretty well.

If you can't get it off with the pliers, try applying heat to the bolts. Just don't over-do it!

Another possibility if pliers and heat don't do the job... try carefully turning a die onto the bolt to clean the threads. You could even apply heat and then try the die while it was still warm.

Ok I did the heat thing and it readily chipped and flaked off via heat gun treatment and a pocket knife. Tomorrow I'm using a wire wheel brush in a drill to get the rest out.

thanks guys!
