Skerry: how to round stems

Hi,

I am about to round the stems and wonder how to start. The stems are not equally wide at all places. Especially at the edges of the panels or in other words where panel 1 meets panel 2 and so on the stems are wider as in the middle of the panels.

Should I flatten the stems first - the stems will remain being wider at some places if I dont change the curve of bow or stern - and then try to get them the same width everyhwere when rounding

or

should i work on the panels first to get the stem the same width everywhere and then flatten and round them?

To me it seems I got to choose the right way I cannot experiment building one boat only.

Would be great to get some advice.

Thanks!

Reinhard

RE: Skerry: how to round stems

Option #1 is how I'd do it.  Please don't use a grinder.  Bad things can happen real fast with a grinder.  Use a nice sharp block plane.  Take your time.  Take a few swipes with the plane, step back and look,  feel gently with your hands.  This is a most important step in your build.  Again, slow and gentle.  She's a virgin.  Enjoy.   P.S.  The same advice applies to the shaping of your db and rudder.

Hi John,

thanks for the advice with the plane. Didn't think one could plane epoxy seams. It worked perfectly and I have been able to get very smooth and even stems.

I also used the rabbet plane for for smoothening the lapjoints and it worked perfectly.

Hi Reinhard,

You're welcome, friend.  Glad it worked out for you.  Be sure to send us some pictures when you're done.  To my eyes, the skerry is the best looking boat in the entire clc fleet.

Beautiful work Reinhard! Figuring out how to post your images was more fun than what I'm supposed to be doing ...

RE: Skerry: how to round stems

Thanks, Old Yeller, for getting Reinhard's pics posted.  I certainly agree with you that he's doing a fine job.  Maybe Reinhard is like me; an analog guy living in a digital world.  They lost me when they came out with touch tone phones.

Thanks again,

John

Hi Old Yeller,

please tell me how you got this pictures  visible. John is probably right with analog - although I am in digital design business for 40 years now!! I think in some ways I still belong to the old world.

Check this: http://www.clcboats.com/various/posting-photos-forums.html

I just entered the URL for the image, hit <enter>, and waited a second for the actual image dimensions to load. Since the stated width was greater than the limit of 575 pixels, I changed the width to 575, and cleared the default entry for the image height. Then I hit "insert". You can also select how you want the image aligned before you hit <insert>. I might have selected "Left", but it might not be necessary to select an alignment option.

Thanks, no excuse anymore for not including pictures.
