Northeast Dory Stem

George, . Did you shape the stem to match the contour of the bow or use a straight piece of wood imbedded in epoxy? Tom Bolko

RE: Northeast Dory Stem

Tom,

The stem follows the shape of the bow. It's about 2" thick and 1.5" wide. Here's some pics.

Fitting stem to bow contour

Fitting breasthook

Starting to shape stem

More shaping

Final shape

Epoxied in place

And that's all there is to it!

RE: Northeast Dory Stem

Just for the record, as the boat's designer I disapprove of substituting a wooden stem for the specified epoxy fillet and glass tape.  Talented boatwrights like George Krewson can pull it off, but it adds a lot of complexity without adding any strength or function.

Does it look good?  Absolutely!  Traditional?  Sort of.  But forewarned, it's not easy to get right compared to the stitch-and-glue stem.
