Night Heron Question: Can I make it past the chine without cheaters?

On Nick's page http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guillemot/blog/nick/installing_cheater_strips

he has an illustration that fits what I now have in process; progress toward the chine with sheer strip and no cheater strips.

Can I make it past the chine without using cheater strips? Nick advocates cutting off the cove/bead, and then beveling the edges to make it past the chine.

If I can make it past the chine without using cheaters and without cutting off the cove/bead and beveling the edges, I would like to continue what I've started. Otherwise, I guess I need to do something at the chine.

Any suggestions: I don't have any cheater strips so far, and I have 5 strips on a regular Night Heron from the sheer strip to just before the chine in the middle of the boat.

Sorry for all the questions while I wait for the glue to dry...LOL!

RE: Night Heron Question: Can I make it past the chine without cheaters?

Well, I've added two more strips without adding cheaters, that's seven total. The latest strip was a pain, because at the bow, stern, and middle of the boat it is basically vertical, but between these points it is twisted to bend at the chine.

I guess I should just keep putting on strips until I get to a point where I must do something else.

I have alot of glue that now drips out while clamping (good sign I guess), and I wipe it off with a wet rag after I clamp. Dried glue comes off with a scraper.

More later...

Hi Chris,

Can you post a photo so that we can better understand the issue ?

Hi Chris,

You are doing great !!!    No need to doubt your skills.

You do need to use a cheater strip soon or your problem will only get worse.  It's not hard to do.  On your next strip, clamp it down just like you did on the others, only this time let the strip go straight from about form number 3 to the end. Then fill in the space with your cheater strips.

You have the skills.  I can see that in your photos.  I am a newbie at this too.   Every skill I have came from Nick Schades two books and the good folks on this fourm.

Take a look at some of my photos to see the cheater strips on my kayaks.

Lou,

Thanks for the suggestions, but it looks like the next strip won't be able to go straight from form 3 to the end...it has a lot of bend and then a twist before making it to the stern.

Guess I'll have to keep putting strips on while bending the ends to make them fit.

Live and learn,

Chris F.

RE: Night Heron Question: Can I make it past the chine without cheaters?

Thanks for your help Lou,

Guess I made it past the chine, and today I had a chance to close up the hull. Wow, lots of work and patience was needed to keep working to finish this part of my build.

I was not able to put on any cheater strips, and I was worried that I would encounter problems along the way to the keel line. No problems were encountered, but little gliches were sent to me from the boat building gremlins...(really just my fear of a first time boat builder)! But, I kept telling myself, it's only wood, and if I do screw it up I can cut it out and repair it.

More pictures later,

P.S. Watch Nick's videos and read his book, measure many times, make patterns, cut once (or try not to screw it up), sharpen your plane, but most of all...don't rush...have patience...lots of patience...I think CLC must have sent me some with my kit...and they didn't even charge me for it...LOL!

Your Night Heron looks great Chris.

Strip building has a learning curve.  The more you do the more you learn. You will find that when you build the deck, you will use what you learned from the hull and do a better job.

Nick's books and videos have been priceless to me.  I have worn out the pages in my quest to build and learn.  I wish that he would write a book on how to use a sea kayak.  I would be the first to buy one.

Keep up the good work. and if you should find yourself in south east Michigan some day, give me a call.

Lou
