Picked up a freebie canoe. It is a MadRiver and is out of Royalex. Any suggestions on painting this thing? It has been very neglected and is faded. No deep gouges or scratches.

You might contact Mad River - or at least your paint manufacturer/vendor - and ask them what they recommend.
If you just paint it, I suspect sanding the hull to give it some "tooth" for the paint to adhere to would be useful.
