"Snow Pea" is Launced

Hi to everyone,

Here are a few photos of my just completed Eastport Pram which after much debate has been christened "Snow Pea". Anything to do with peas is in a good naming tradition and there always seems to be more snow where I live.

I started this project on Christmas morning when I unwrapped the plans which had been place under the tree by my very understanding wife Alison. The boat was launched at my 60th birthday party yesterday afternoon with a bunch of good friends looking on.

The supposed rational for building the pram was the need for a "row boat" as opposed to a raft on our newly enlarged pond. Alison has been dreaming about making our pond larger for years and we finally did it last October. I was in the shower one morning and starting laughing when I realised that it was going to require a very long pole for the raft on the new pond which was 15' deep. I then understood that a boat was required and the idea of actually building one started making its presence felt. So I looked on the Internet and started reading some books.

I realised that I wanted to build a beautifully curved boat resembling those of Iain Outred (Clinker Plywood BoatBuilding Manual) and that it had to be in record time like the boats of "Dynamite" Payson ("Instant Boat Building").

I couldn't find anything that was satisfying until I stumbled across CLC boats and the Eastport Pram. I won't go into any of the boat building details in this email. The most important thing is that creating this boat from the cutting out the parts to the finishing has been one of the best and most creative experiences of my life.

So I just want to say thanks everyone at CLC and on the forum for making it possible by providing the plans and all the help.

Take care and happy sailing

RE: "Snow Pea" is Launced

Hi Elliot,

Wow... nice work on the pram - she's a beauty! (You just need to drop the ?v=0 off the end of those links to get them to work).

I'd like to see some more photo's of the 'pea' on the pond too??

I've just started my Mill Creek, and feel the same. Have read a lot of books and internet discussions (mostly here at CLC). I've only glued 3 bits of ply together (work keeps getting in the way) but I can tell it's going to be a lot of fun and very rewarding at the end.

I'll try and get some photo's of my 'pond' up in next couple of days.

Cheers

Nice work indeed.

Its great when the work is finished and you can get it on the water.

we (my six boys and I) just finished our Millcreek 16.5. and its has been a real treat to spend family time on the local lake.

Don't want to hijack your thread Elliot but here's one of the lakes I'll be paddling on:

Lake Te Anau

and a different shot (different jetty) after some heavy rains (this lake feeds a hydro power station):

and then same jetty a few weeks later:

Better get building :-)

Cheers

Steve

p.s. Jon - I would like to see some photo's of your Millcreek...

it floats like a dream...were thinking about building a 2nd one

RE: "Snow Pea" is Launched

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm still trying to understand the fine points of inserting pictures. Anyway here's another go at the links to the flikr site:

Hally, why do you think your pictures came out so much larger. I thought the cropping was due to the way the insert script on this site worked, not the resolution of the linked pictures themselves. Any ideas?
