i'm at the stage of sanding my CLC 17 kayak. It seems strange, in retrospect, that the instruction manuel had us put on the hatch rims BEFORE sanding! It makes it much more difficult to sand. Any explanation of why this order?

But what's done is done. Any suggestions about how to effectively and safely sand around the rims?
