Randy,

I tried the trimming guide on my first boat, a 17lt, and after a foot or so of nervous cutting I flipped the thing over and happily cut away with the pull saw. Done it that way ever since. I actually think there's an advantage doing it with the boat keel side up: you can follow the angle of the sides and it leads to less planing in the long run.
