Camper is right. It's all about aspect ratio. A deep skeg with small fore and aft dimension is much more effective that a long shallow one of the same area. If long and shallow worked, airplane wings would be shaped that way. So, keeping in mind beaching and going thru kelp beds, make it as short and deep as you can. Paul Gow, Naval Architect
