Chester for 1st build??

Posted by CJ on Feb 10, 2008

Hi Everyone,

I see that Greg is going for the Chester Yawl for his 1st build, as am I.

Has anybody built a CHY and done a long haul trip?

I live in Florida and have limited skills for wood working. It sounds like the kit is a safe and easy intro to S&G building.

My intention is to row up the East Coast this Summer.I have sailed this area ( Florida to Mass., several times) I know I will encounter areas of rougher wx and water. I know I will need more gear then the average weekender.

Has anyone done extended cruising in these vessels? Can one use the focs'l for storage? Is the CG forgiving in this design? Is the wing a much better advantage over standard design? What sustained speed for a in shape person could I expect? Is a 8-10 hr rowing day realistic?

A lot of questions, I know. Most of my rowing is in the Aluminum class and know there is a significant difference.

However this seems like a very knowledgable, kind and helpful group. Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
