As Lee says, there's no real reason. Asthetically I like the looks and have done it on several boats. It's best to install the copper (I'v never used PVC as I don't want a white ring around the toggle) before doing the end pour. Also be sure to round off the inside edge so it won't cut into the rope. It's also possible to use a hollowed out dowel. I've seen it done with mahogany and the dark contrasting wood looks great with the oukume.
