I'm getting into it myself. (tho' I've row'd alum. boats since I was a kid..) You didn't mention: fixed or sliding seat? World of diff even tho' many say the results are similar especially with a heavier hull with lotsa freeboard. I've bought three books on sculling (sliding seat) in the last few months and the most recent: Rowing by Keith Maybery is available used on Amazon (as are about 10 other books) for about $10. Great photos and good basics. Also check out Shaw&Tenney's page on selecting oars - better for fixed seat. It will be interesting to see if you like going 'backwards' - that's the only downside vs. kayaking I can see.
