Building a kayak is not like framing a deck. It is all about balancing strength, weight and performance. "over building" is just that - doing something that is not necessary and that will result in a bad combination of form and function, not to mention a waste of material and money. I have a CH16 that has 6oz on the hull and cockpit floor, 3oz on the deck, and bias-cut strips of 6oz in the place of tape in the compartments. She weights 40 lb fully rigged and take abuse like you would not believe.
