Makes sense especially if the exterior layer of glass is integral to the structure for transmitting forces from one panel to the next. I think I ended up with the short overlap after trying to fair the edge of the overlap and seeing some CLC kayaks with the overlap sanded flush. Never saw any delamination with the short overlap. On kayaks like the Shearwater/Mergansers/Pygmys where the deck/hull is joined by glass I kept the overlap glass solid for 3/4"-1" down the sides.
