I would second Jim's suggestion of the Chester Yawl. It may be possible to add a 3 or 4 mm deck and bulkheads for dry storage and to help keep spray out. Then the cockpit area could be only as large as you need for the rowing movement. This sounds like a very cool project. Keep us posted on what you decide to do.
