Actually those grooves are more useful for the water to escape the hatch & gasket area. I used a rasp file with a curvature of about 1"-2". I put a groove on the lowest part on each side, right on the finger joints just like CLC shows. This location brings out the different layers of wood nicely. Internal bunggees work but somewhat of a pain with a boat fully loaded with gear up to the bottom of tha hatches. Use wood hooks and not the metal one's CLC first experimented with.
