There's always a trick - that's what boatbuilders do :-)

My trick is to use slightly larger pieces of glass than what is actually needed. I mark out the edges of this larger piece with that blue adhesive tape which comes from DYI hardware stores, but any thin tape should do. The tape is centered over the cut line, so that when I cut the glass, each edge ends up with a strip of tape on it to immobilize the threads.

After the glass has been applied and cured to the so-called "green" stage (firm, no longer tacky, but still flexible), I use a razor blade to cut the glass to its correct size.

I'm sure there's lots of other tricks ready to come out of the woodwork.
