Don't feel foolish, it has happened to all of us, Laz.
This is why every kayak should either be glassed inside, or be equipped with a kayak stern catfish barrier ("KSCB") from a reputable kayak stern catfish barrier (or, "KSCB") manufacturer.
But as Bob Fensterparkle says in "Catfish-proofing Your Kayak", no KSCB is foolproof, so it is good to mount a sturdy waterproof ceiling light under the stern deck as well; it will more than pay for itself the very next time you lose a catfish in the stern of your kayak.
