I use at LEAST two

depending on the color I'm using. I've found that whites and very light colors cover far better than darker ones. Using dark colors, and particualrly the blues and greens ( in my experience) it takes at least three coats and sometimes four to get good coverage.

Brightsides wants to be applied quite thinly or it'll sag and or run which is part of the reason for the needing multiple coats.

As to buffing, I'll have to let some one else answer that part- never tried it since I usually spray finish the boats I build.
