The vcp hatch has a reputation for reliability because in comparison most production hatches are marginal at best. The 9" round hatch is bombproof but like the oval hatch requires a flat frame/deck for installation. Which ends up putting it up the air above a flat deck. Speaking as a practical guy you can make flush hatches that are more waterproof than the oval vcp hatch in very rough use/rescues and just as good as the round one. All it takes is adequate clasps around the perimeter of the hatch like the AHawk closures.
Oval hatches are more convenient for packing than round hatches.
