I am of the "Dont need tape if you are glassing" school. There's more to it than abrasion - the panels become quite a bit stronger with glass on both sides.

Some care is needed when prodding glass down onto soft fillets - It's a little easier if you wait for about an hour so that they stiffen a little, but dont wait too long.
