If you have a router you can groove your plywood flange. It all depends on how flush you want your hatch lid. I do not bother with a groove. However, a 3 mm spacer between the deck and flange seems to leave my hatches a little recessed after gasket compression. I do not do fancy deck on-lays. In fact, I am now using rubber hatches on S&G because of their access convenience. It is all effort versus aesthetics.
