I had the exact same problem. I'm still scratching my head. I did my share of reading on the subject, took every precaution, and still got them. The only thing I did not do is thin down the varnish, and after reading your story, it looks like that doesn't help either. I just learned to accept them. If you figure out what causes them (dust, silicone contamination, etc), I'd love to know. This winter I'm going to sand her down and try again. The only thing is, I don't know what to different, so I'll probably get the same results. :(
