Skeg Location

Is there an optimum location for mounting a skeg in a kayak (I can imagine how the purists are going to answer this one)? Is farther back better, or is there a point of diminishing return? I was trying to preserve as much cargo area as possible for the camping trips. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
