That won't work in deep v notches. You'll end up with tape pulling away from the fillet. If you force the tape to stay there, the joint will be weakened since the tape is now folded instead of bent. The fold will be a stress concentrator.

Go ahead and use the rule of thumb, but also make sure that the allowable bending radius for the glass is not exceeded. If it is, add only enough putty to fix the problem.
