Insurance

I am relocating to another state and checked my home owners policy and to my surprise discoved that my kayak in its car top carrier is not covered under either my home owners policy (because it would not be AT the home), nor is covered by my auto insurance because it is not IN the vehicle. How are others protecting their CLC investment from theft while on the road, or damage in an accident when traveling? Thanks.
