Mick,

SInce the veneers for onlays are thin you really should protect them with something a bit more substantial that varnish. I would glue on the onlay, put a scrap of 4 oz cloth over it, epoxt and fill the cloth and feather in the edges. You won't be able to see the 4 oz if you do it right. Then varnish. Should work.
